Project Grants
This is our main award programme and is generally used to support postdoctoral researchers plus necessary consumables, travel or technical assistance over a period of up to three years. Support will also be considered for equipment if essential to the project. - Innovative Basic Grant Awards
These are one-year grant awards to fund work that is fundamental to the understanding of CGD. Their aim is to provide support for a short-term, small-scale pilot or proof of concept research projects. Funds are available up to £40,000. - Ph.D. Studentships
Ph.D. studentships will be offered to exceptional candidates in laboratories that have a proven track record research in CGD. The studentships are designed to encourage the best young science graduates to embark on a research career in CGD. - Clinical Research Fellowships

The Grant Application Process
There is only one round of grant funding each year. A call for proposals is made in the journal ‘Nature’ in April. We ask for a preliminary application that gives details of the proposed work, its relevance to CGD and approximate costings for the work. Selected applicants are then asked to complete a full grant application form. All applications are peer reviewed. The grant applications and the reviewer’s comments are considered by our Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel who pass their recommendations for funding to the board of Trustees. Final funding decisions are made in January of the following year.
Timetable for Grant Applications in 2005
- An advertisement for calls for proposals is carried in the journal
Nature in April and circulated by e-mail to researchers on our database.
- Preliminary applications to be received by the 14 th May 2005.
Preliminary applications - Following initial review, selected applicants will be invited to complete a full grant application form. Call for full applications by the 1st July 2005.
- The Full Grant Application Process
- Full applications to be received by 9th September 2005.
- Review by the Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel , 24th November 2005.
- Grant applicants informed of Trustee’s funding decisions by January 2006.
External Peer Review
Full grant applications are subjected to full independent review by specialist
referees. At least two independent external opinions are obtained for each
full grant application. Applicants should feel free to nominate suitable
qualified referees for their application; however, the Trust may select alternatives.
Similarly, applicants should indicate any person they do not wish to be selected
as a referee.
Comments from the external reviewers are sent back to the applicants once
the funding decisions have been made.
Our Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel
The CGD Research Trust's Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel plays a crucial part in determining research direction. The Panel meets each year in November to discuss the grant applications and consider reports from external referees. Our panel of experts advises the Trustees on the projects of greatest merit.
